Hudson River Painters
Manifest Destiny was a theory that justified United States Expnsionism in the mid-19th Century. Many of the artists of the period embraced these visions and ideals through their work.
Images convey meaning and can be used as primary documents in the study of history. The above "American Progress"(1872) painting by John Gast is a good example of how the art of the time reflects the view that the west was considered a dark an wild place and should be redeemed by Westward Expansion. It also shows how society at the time justified the political actions of the day.
